The question that we are now being asked is, will the radical Sunnis take over Iraq and route Americans out of the Baghdad embassy? What it looks like is the evacuation of Saigon in April of 1975.
Sunnis have taken Fallujah, Mosul, Tikrit, Baiji and they are closing in on Baghdad. The mounted government now is begging for U.S. military support and President Obama is now open to it. Our 11-year effort has failed. There is no question that Iraq is worse off today than it was before our 2003 invasion and certainly worse off since our first military confrontation with Iraq in 1991.
Radical neocons are arguing for military assistance, as to be expected. They don’t want the lives lost and the dollars spent in those 11 years to have been in vain. This major error cannot be rectified by refusing to admit the folly of our way. It’s a foreign policy failure of gigantic proportions. Just having more Americans die in vain and wasting more money is a no-win confrontation and does not alter the senseless losses of the past decade. The American people should refuse to support any military escalation in Iraq or anywhere in the entire region.
