September 30, 2014 – Today we discuss Common Core. Common Core is a federal educational initiative that sets specific requirements for what K-12 students should know in English and math at the end of each grade, and includes rigorous standardized testing of these students. These requirements are becoming very unpopular and have been shown to be ineffective.
Standardized testing is not the best way to measure understanding of a subject for all students. Students learn in different ways, and the stress and pressure of a standardized test can do more harm than good.
Also, the initiative has a heavy focus on English and math, and is lacking in science, social studies, physical education and the arts.
A school district in Colorado recently voted to opt most students out of Common Core’s standardized testing. The school district superintendent Nicholas Gledich explained said the district is looking for flexibility because quote “one size does not fit all.”
And the recent cheating scandal in Alabama highlights what’s wrong with standardized testing and No Child Left Behind.
