Libertarians and Science

September 4, 2014 – A recent article on The Guardian suggests that libertarianism and science are natural enemies. This could not be further from the truth. Libertarianism is a political philosophy that is not fundamentally opposed to or in agreement with any particular scientific tenant. The author claims that scientific issues like climate change and gun control (which is more sociology than hard science to begin with) are incompatible with libertarian ideology, when in fact, libertarians can and do support a wide array of beliefs on the issue and a wide variety of possible solutions. Furthermore, the author acknowledges only the facts that support his case on the issue of gun control, a method which is as unscientific as possible. This is yet another attempt to condense the entire liberty spectrum down to a few specific beliefs in order to make it easier to attack. Libertarianism is absolutely compatible with scientific data and methodology, and merely dictates what ought to be done in the political realm given those facts.
