September 9, 2014 – This episode of The Tom Woods Show covers how low-cost private schools are educating the poor all over the world. James Tooley’s work in this area is just extraordinary. He is the author of “The Beautiful Tree: A Personal Journey into How the World’s Poorest People Are Educating Themselves” and today he defies conventional wisdom about learning, low-income people, and the state.
“The status quo of public education, we take it for granted so much and we assume any modification to it has to be justified… but the status quo of public education has only been there for 100 years,” Tooley said. “It’s only been there for a while and it’s imposed upon a free market of educational provision. It has to be justifying itself, not us trying to move away from it.”
Do you agree with Tooley’s perspective on public education? Do you think private education offers a positive alternative to the status quo?
