In this case, I would say this individual should certainly have the right to make this decision. I would not try to say that it’s always easy to make these decisions because depending on age and particular diseases the circumstances can be pretty tough on listening to a parent who says, “No medical care whatever.” What do you do? Sit by and watch your child die when you know 100% death is going to be likely the case if they don’t get medical care.
All I can say is on those conditions, you do your very best working with individuals, working with the family, working through persuasion. Still, under certain circumstances there will be no perfect, easy answer. This one I think is a little bit easier. I’d let that 17 year old make her own decision.
