January 14, 2015—Whistleblower Edward Snowden has advice for his former employers on US cyber policy.
In an interview with PBS’s NOVA, Snowden mentions the US government’s Stuxnet cyber attack against Iran’s nuclear energy program as an example of policy with unintended consequences. By going on the offensive, Americans are put at greater risk for little gain says the former NSA contractor.
The analogy Snowden draws is of two bank vaults, one belonging to the US and the other an adversary. “We have so much more to lose,” he says.
