Danger and Opportunity: Liberty in Crisis in 2016

May 11, 2016—Jacob Hornberger, president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, encourages lovers of liberty to keep spreading the message during this dark time.

Well with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump the presumed nominees for their respective parties for the presidential race, it would be easy for libertarians to become depressed and despondent over the prospects of liberty, given that both of these candidates are dyed-in-the-wool statists, socialists, imperialists, interventionists.

Miss_Liberty_I_(3010067161)But remember that old Chinese symbol of crisis. It’s composed of two separate symbols, danger and opportunity, that clearly these two candidates present a threat to our economic wellbeing, our freedom, our sense of wellbeing, our security, but at the same time there’s opportunity. There’s clearly discontent in the country.

Clinton keeps losing primaries, Trump’s divided the Republican Party, and people are asking questions. And when they ask questions, that’s when libertarianism comes into play, because we’ve got the solution to the woes that are rooted in the welfare-warfare state way of life, including the drug war, and so that’s why we need to just keep putting ideas on liberty out there, with the idea of letting people discover them, digest them and reflect upon them as most of us libertarians did when we discovered libertarianism.

This is the key, not reform ideas like conservatives promote on how to reform the welfare-warfare state, but sound ideas on liberty on why we need to dismantle the infringements on liberty. That’s the key to a free, prosperous, peaceful, and harmonious society.
