May 23, 2016—Jacob Hornberger, president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, used his latest video tidbit to talk about something both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton hate: free trade.
One of the big issues in the upcoming presidential race will be over trade.
Donald Trump is a protectionist. He wants to erect great big protectionist wall in addition to his immigration wall that will protect American businesses from overseas competition. But of course, other countries will retaliate, which will hurt the very American producers and businessmen that Trump is trying to help with this protectionism. But more important, it’s an attack on the freedom, the economic liberty of the American people.
People have a right to do whatever they want with their own money, buy from whomever they want. And when they do so, they raise their standard of living in every trade. Because we’re giving up something they value less for something they value more.
Hillary Clinton unfortunately is not any better. She believed in terrorist and other forms of trade restrictions. She believes in sanctions and embargoes that land most heavily on the poor people in other countries.
Look at the embargo in Cuba. [For] fifty years or more, it has squeezed the life out of the Cuban people along with their socialist system. Sanctions against Iran, sanctions against Iraq, which killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children, many of the during the Bill Clinton administration. And then there’s the sanctions against North Korea. And it’s all with the intent of squeezing the poor and the rest of the people in that society in the hopes that they’ll change the policy or the regime of their government. How moral is that?
The only solution to all this is the libertarian idea of freedom of trade, economic liberty. Leaving people free to do whatever they want with their own money, to trade with anybody anywhere in the world, that is the key to freedom as well as rising standards of living.
