June 27, 2016—In under two minutes, Jacob Hornberger, president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, covers Donald Trump’s attempt to capitalize on the recent vote of the UK to leave the European Union.
In the wake of the big Brexit vote in England, Donald Trump is once again saying that if he is elected president, he’s going to make America great again. Unfortunately, what he fails to recognize is that his economic policies and philosophy, which are really no different from Clinton’s, are the root cause of America’s demise.
He’s just going to make it worse. Look at the welfare state. You got Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid. Neither he nor Clinton is talking about cutting even one minute aspect of that.
And then, of course, there’s the warfare state, the national security establishment, this old Cold War dinosaur-like apparatus that both he and Clinton are wedded to keeping. What we need is a major readjustment here in the United States that involves a dismantling of these old Cold War, post-World War II apparatuses, including NATO, but Clinton and Trump can’t think at that level. That’s why they support things like the drug war and so many other government programs that have proved to be such a disaster.
The reason that America was great in the 19th century was that you had no income tax and IRS.Charity was entirely voluntary. You had no immigration controls, very few trade restrictions, economic regulations within the country.
The big exception, of course, was tariffs, and, of course, earlier in the century, slavery. But in terms of economic liberty, especially in the latter part of the 19th century, this is what was causing the enormous increase in the standard of living of the American people. The point? We need to focus on restoring economic liberty to our land. The greatness will come as a byproduct.
